aura gallery was founded in 2000, and currently works with international artists, emerging and established Chinese artists, the latter were mostly discovered by founder Zhang MingFang. The program’s focus has been on intercultural and painterly-based approaches in a variety of media including oil painting, Chinese ink painting, photography, calligraphy and sculpture. As a pioneer of Chinese contemporary arts, the gallery has successfully placed works in a variety of private and public collections.

The gallery’s first location opened in Shanghai with an exhibition of paintings by Yin ZhaoYang and was soon followed by exhibitions of Luo QuanMu, Wang YaBin, Ji DaChun, who became significant Chinese artists of the generation. In 2003, the gallery started to work with international artists. Early exhibitions included Roger Ballen, Moriyama Daido and “Mask – Japan Contemporary Photographs ” toured to GuangDongMoMA, the first museum show curated by gallerist in China. Since 2012, the gallery has been working closely with Japanese photograph masters. Important curatorial exhibitions included Moriyama Daido’s “A Room”, Araki Nobuyoshi’s “Calligraphy” and Suda Issei’s “Taipei Kissyo”.

The gallery relocated in Beijing in 2009. In April 2014, the gallery took up a second location in Taipei, and is operated by partner Huang Yaji. Known for its rigorously scouting and overseeing, and consistent quality to its program, the gallery has, over the past 16 years, continued its tradition of commissioning new scholarship and creating innovative trends in Chinese contemporary art scene.
